The film with the most Oscar nominations may have to settle for a win in one of the technical categories.

The fine folks over at Defamer have posted their insights regarding the possibility of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button going 0-for-13 at the Oscars.

While I agree that Button probably won't win any of the major awards, it will walk away with at least Best Visual Effects or Best Makeup.

I have a hard time believing that The Dark Knight will win Best Visual Effects. Isn't it pretty much common knowledge among people who follow movies or make them that Knight director Christopher Nolan tries to avoid using visual effects whenever possible? I just can't see the Academy recognizing a film that relies more on old-fashioned real locations and real stunts.

As for Best Makeup, when it comes down to it I think voters will remember how seamlessly Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett were made to look anything but their age, and that could be the deciding factor.

With that in mind, it's still kind of ironic that the film the with the most nominations this year is going to have to settle for technical awards. Yet in every one of the major categories, Benjamin Button is going up against heavy favorites. Brad Pitt is particularly in over his head considering that Best Actor is officially a two-horse race between Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke.
