She Came, She Saw, She Kicked Ass

Okay, I'm going to get a little self-indulgent here, so cut me some slack. Thank you. Anyway, so last week, I was sitting in my darkened Hell Octaplex watching Wanted -- a film which, to give it its due, is to intelligent action flicks what Kenny Loggins is to rock 'n' roll -- and suddenly a thought swept over me like a neural tsunami: You know what this movie needs? former Xena Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless!!!

Of couse, this is sort of old news; people that know me are tediously aware that I often assert that all women -- past, present and future -- pale into insignificance compared to the awesomeness that is Xena, Warrior Princess/Lucy Lawless. I can actually recall the first time I had the insight -- about halfway through the first Xena episode I ever saw, in the fall of 1995. In the show, three huge hulking guys (a lot of the supporting actors on the series, which was shot in New Zealand, were Maoris, so if you've ever seen Once Were Warriors, you know what I mean) came after Xena/Lucy with huge hulking swords. She responded by leaping into the air and then floating serenely as she kicked each one of them in turn in the face before finally returning to the ground. The whole thing seemed to take about a minute and a half, and remember -- this was years before The Matrix enabled action heroes to violate the laws of physics at will, so she was clearly doing it for real out of sheer charisma. Frankly, I was an instant goner -- wotta gal! Later in the course of the series, Xena/Lucy smashed all the remaining laws of time and space by attending both the Trojan War (she and Helen bonded) and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Also along the way she found the time (despite that whole lesbian thing she had going with her surfer chick/gal pal/sidekick Gabrielle -- how's that for a Greek name?) to casually boink Julius Caesar. Like I said, all women pale...

Anyway, to get halfway serious for a minute, I was convinced that after the show ended Lawless would go on to be the next big female movie action star, but it just hasn't happened (and don't get me started about what she could have done if she'd been in 300). True, she's had a more than respectable career since then -- a funny cameo in the first Spiderman movie, a recurring role on the revamped Battlestar Galactica, doing the voice of Wonder Woman in an animated Justice League movie -- but for some reason, comparative non-entities like Angelina Jolie keep stealing the parts, as in Wanted, that are rightfully hers. Well, to this I say -- shame! Can Angelina Jolie do this?

I think not! Note to self: Pitch a musical version of The Oresteia -- starring Lucy as Clytemnestra -- to Roland Emmerich pronto!

Um, well, I was with you until the duet ... I guess it's a guy thing. You know, two blondes screaming at each other ...

Personally, I think she looks better as a brunette.

And I'm definitely with you about Jolie. I don't get it.

It's not impossible that, were Lucy Lawless, y'know, straight, it'd have been easier for her. Bet that never occurred to you...

Never watched Xena so I don't know Lucy all that well. Atractive woman.

As for Jolie, I'm not much of a fan. She's another that takes herself more than a little too seriously.

When she made the comment that she loves her adopted kids more than the children she gave birth to because the adopted children had it a lot harder (she adopted them as infants), I pretty much figured her as insane.

She is straight - married with 3 kids.

It's the usual thing--audiences sometimes don't care for the real thing and prefer a comfortable simulacrum.

So was I, actually. I'm still baffled about it.

Jolie might have unjustified fame, but at least she's not completely self-indulgent. So I'm okay with that.

Xena, ummmm . . .I get your point, but Gabriella really does it for me.

i don't know. i've only seen princess warrior a couple of times, but i was a big buffy the vampire slayer fan, now that chick rocks.

i don't like movies so i've never seen angelina act, but she's a hottie.

but the first time i saw maddona do lucky star i knew she was going to be big (i had no idea), and it wasn't her talent that convinced me.

It takes a reviewer with depth and understanding to reach back and relate current movie mania to a substantial ouvre such as the xena file.

I think Ms. Lawless was better off as a brunette - but she still leaves Ms. Jolie in the dust. At our house, the Mister is currently ga-ga for a brunette of yesteryear, thanks to her recently released Rhino Handmade retrospective - I'm talkin' about Ms. Judy Henske. That woman could sing! Could she act?

I find it humorous that someone implied that Lucy isn't straight. It must have been playing Xena, because of the lesbian following the show had. Because if she was still a regular Kiwi girl in New Zealand hosting traveling shows, no one would say 'oh she's a lesbian'. She was married with child by 19 (she got her awesome name from Garth Lawless) and married for a second time during the middle of Xena.

Lucy actually did literally have all those chances you mentioned; she was offered the roles of the following --

- Wonder Woman (turned it down, was content with playing Xena)
- Jean Grey in X-Men
- Chronicles of Narnia
- Galadriel in Lord of the Rings (pregnant at the time, didn't want to stall production)

...and God knows what else! She could of been an A-list star by now, but I guess she simply wasn't interested. Too bad, because she's all types of inimitable that nobody can compare. Angelina Jolie is cool, but I prefer Lucy Lawless. Even her name is cool.

By the way, you chose my absolute favorite picture of her as Xena from the opening titles, after the 'starring lucy lawless' card.
