Les Girls

Spent part of the weekend at my local Hell Octaplex, catching up on summer flicks both blockbuster and otherwise, and while there was alarmed to encounter the trailer for the forthcoming (September 12th) remake of the 1939 George Cukor chick flick classic The Women written and directed by Murphy Brown auteur Diane English.
But first -- STEVE'S MOVIE REVIEWS™!!!:
Tropic Thunder -- anybody who doesn't think this movie is hilarious is a retard!
Pineapple Express -- The Citizen Kane of really dumb stoner process server comedies. James Franco is hilarious, though.
Bottle Shock -- Alan Rickman as a supercilious Brit wine snob? Wow -- there's a stretch!
Okay, and before you start yelling at me, the "retard" in the above was meant as an ironic commentary on the current controversy over the use of the word in Tropic Thunder.
But I digress. In any case, here's the trailer in question.
What's the word I'm looking for...? Oh yes, that would be -- yipes!
Seriously, I realize that, especially in this election season, we are a deeply divided country with very little that we can agree upon.
That said, I'm sure all of us, regardless of our political affiliations or convictions, can come together behind the idea that casting Meg Ryan as Norma Shearer is a sure sign of the Apocalypse to come.

TCM ran On The Town last night.
After watching Ann Miller and Vera-Ellen dance, I have no further use for modern filmmaking. To hell with it all.
I think I'll watch it again.
Let's cast The Maltese Falcon with Shia LaBeouf and Kiera Knightly.

Oy.
"Sex and the City" on steroids.
I think I'll just watch the original instead ... Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Joan Fontaine, directed by Cukor, written by Anita Loos, gowns by Adrian ... sigh ...

I can't stand Kiera Knightly. Would somebody please tell her to close her mouth at least once? If I see one more of those pseudosexy, poofy mouth pout photos, I'm gonna take the proverbial hostage.

As little as I care for Norma Shearer after her precode days (her affectations irritate me), this remake is an abomination. Even the version I saw on PBS (with Cynthia Nixon in the Shearer role) has got to be better than this.
