Well, today is a truly historic day, so obviously what the world needs is more snark from moi about an obscure made-for-TV movie.

Well, actually it does, but first...STEVE'S MOVIE REVIEWS™!!!

Changeling -- Angelina Jolie in a nuthouse again. Is she trying to tell us something? Written by the guy who created Babylon 5, but if there were any aliens I didn't see them.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno -- Any movie featuring Traci Lords with decolletage is okay by me, although I prefer her early, funny films. I'm getting damn sick of Seth Rogen getting the girl, however.

But I digress.

In any case, the obscure made-for-TV movie in question (actually, Paramount released it theatrically once they took a look at it, although it wasn't a hit) is one that's highly relevant to today's epochal events. I refer, of course, to the 1972 Rod Serling-scripted The Man, a prescient political thriller in which an African-American accidentally becomes -- you guessed it -- President of the United States.

Here's a brief clip to give you the flavor of the thing.

That is, of course, none other than a pre-Darth Vader James Earl Jones as the Prez. And lots of other great character actors show up along the way -- William Windom as a scheming Secretary of State, Lew Ayres as an aging Vice President, wonderful vet Patrick Knowles as a racist South African ambassador, and -- I'm sure you saw this one coming -- Burgess Meredith as a liberal Senator.

Serling's exellent script is based on a pretty good potboiler by Irving Wallace, and the film is tautly directed by Joseph Sargent, who also did another terrific TV movie that escaped into general release, Colossus: The Forbin Project. For some reason it's never been on home video, although it wouldn't exactly surprise me if Paramount rushes it onto DVD after tonight. In any event, if it shows up on the tube any time soon, definitely check it out.
