Well, there's terrific news for fright flick buffs (and me, since I'm on the promo list heh heh): On October 6th, Warner Home Video will be releasing Karloff and Lugosi Horror Classics, a box set featuring four new to DVD horror films starring (duh) Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. I am happy to report that two of the films -- You'll Find Out (1940) and Zombies on Broadway (1945) -- are terrific period mixes of horror and comedy of the kind they really don't make any more. Even better, my personal fave Frankenstein 1970 (1958) is a fabulously ahead of its time piece of post-modern irony with Boris as the descendant of the mad doctor forced to rent out his castle to a film crew shooting a B-horror flick, while The Walking Dead (1936) is a bona fide classic with one of Karloff's finest performances and absolutely smashing direction by Michael Curtiz, perhaps the supreme visual stylist on the Warner Bros. assembly line.

Here's the opening sequence; as you can see, it's a neat mix of expressionistic horror and uber-Warner Bros. gangster movie.

In any case, all four of these are long overdue on home video, and I for one can't wait to get my mitts on the box set. I need only add, of course, that you need to pre-order it over here immediately.
