A Comedic Juggernaut

Date Night brings together two great comic personalities.

Is there any way that Date Night can fail? It could easily be the kind of romantic comedy that brings in $100 million domestically without much trouble.

Combining Steve Carell and Tina Fey may be one of the most ingenious casting moves of the last couple years. Plus, backing them up with a crackerjack supporting cast that includes Mark Ruffalo and Kristen Wiig is the best kind of insurance.

USA Today recently ran an article about the comedy, which is due out on April 9, 2010. The 20th Century Fox release will be in theaters for nearly a month before Iron Man 2 comes along and kicks off the summer season.

As promising as it sounds, I just wish Date Night had a better director behind it than Shawn Levy (the Night at the Museum films), because if either Cameron Crowe, Wes Anderson or James L. Brooks were at the helm then a genuine classic would be possible. I know that this may qualify as blasphemy in some circles, but it isn't so hard to imagine a pairing of Carell and Fey being almost as effective as another classic combination. I won't even utter the words. I'll just post a picture:
