'Goats' Is a Winner

Clooney and Co. make war easy to digest.

If there is a piece of work that can shake the current stigma around any cinematic effort that deals with military endeavors (no, G.I. Joe doesn't count), then The Men Who Stare at Goats is the one.

I was able to catch a screening of the Overture release recently, and rest assured that director Grant Heslov has made an accomplished feature-length debut. Goats easily rivals In the Loop as one of the year's most inventive comedies. The performances from George Clooney, Kevin Spacey and Ewan McGregor are stellar, but Jeff Bridges is the one who stood out the most to me. He deserves to be remembered come Oscar time.

Even though Goats stumbles a bit as it heads into dramatic territory, I was already too enamored to care all that much. With that said, I still prefer Three Kings, another unconventional war flick that stars Clooney.

The folks at Overture can expect solid business when Goats begins its run on November 6. I don't want to make lofty comparisons or anything, but Goats certainly exists in the same vein as the likes of M*A*S*H and Dr. Strangelove. That's good company to keep.
