The big guys talk Digi 3D
Jeffrey Katzenberg (DreamWorks CEO), John Fithian (President & CEO, NATO), and Chris Johnson (Vice President, Classic Cinemas) spoke at this morning’s breakfast. The subject was Digital 3D. Katzenberg is an innovative artist and a brilliant businessman, so when he says that the future is Digital 3D, the audience (of mostly theater owners) listens.

DreamWorks has 9 productions slated to be released between next March 08 through 2009. Jeffrey says, “This is not your grandfather’s 3D!” And it seems he is not alone. Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, George Lucas, and Peter Jackson are all working with this new technology.
“You have the world’s best directors all believing this technology will help them tell their stories better,” says Katzenberg. “This is the most exciting innovation to occur in the theatre since Color,” he adds.
Now if only the studios, theatre owners and filmmakers would only discuss their plans with each other. The panel did get into a debate about chickens and eggs and tails wagging dogs. The problem is that very few theatres are outfitted to show Digital 3D, and studios are mostly focused on converting them over to just plain old digital. Now add another 30 to 40 K to that. Ouch!
That sure was an impressive list of filmmakers making Digital 3D movies.
