Digiscreen Helps Theaters Test Before They Book

One day or many days, it's all in the testing

Though indie and art house theaters might be cringing at the idea of investing in all new digital projectors, exciting new content options for small-circulation and special interest features and shorts are popping up as a result of the accessible new medium.

Digiscreen, for example, offers a computer-operated library of options available to theater owners for a modest $150 per month. Within the system, subscribers may browse and preview features, shorts, trailers, advertisements, and even special access shows linked to exclusive locations like the London Metropolitan Opera.

The content is then shipped out in the form of a hard drive "cartridge" that is inserted easily into the mainframe system of a digital projector. Usage fees are determined after the completion of use.

Digiscreen is currently offering titles like Broken English (starring Parker Posey), and Crazy Love, as well as access to a variety of documentaries, recorded stage plays, Bollywood features, and shorts.

Representatives from Digiscreen say that the goal is to offer accessibility to theaters in order to encourage trying new, independent, or obscure content that may appeal to viewers. With the cost-efficient digital medium, one-day showings are a more realistic possibility.

Representative Mark Malkasian commented that with the unique ability to self-organize screenings and test different types of material on local audiences, small theaters may just find themselves with an advanced understanding of the market surrounding them.
