Seeing is believing when you are seeing Digital 3D
Wednesday at ShowEast Real D sponsored a breakfast where Michael Lewis, Chairman and CEO, unveiled a sampling of Digital 3D shot productions. We got to see a few trailers, sports footage, National Geographic stuff, and Concert Footage.
The overwhelming sentiment was WOW, WOW, WOW, and WOW! You understand very quickly why Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, George Lucas, and others are rushing into this format.
Will customers pay a premium for these movies? Yes, I think they will. I’m not sure how much more.
To be honest, I’ve never loved the 3D movie experience. It’s never enhanced the plot for me. It was always more of a distraction than attraction. I don’t like the glasses. I don’t like wearing them. I can’t imagine having to wear them for 2 hours. When the little object flies out of the screen at me, I’m thinking about the object and not the explosion and story behind the explosion.
I’m thinking about the smirk on the director’s face because he basically just threw that at me. Then I think about my glasses and my new headache.
I’m sure the innovation in comfortable 3D eyewear is coming, so I’m not quick to dismiss the technology just yet. With all those innovative storytellers involved in projects, I’m hopeful about Digital 3D movies.
Where I was really blown away at Real D’s presentation was National Geographic’s Ocean footage and U2 in concert. I was able to watch fish and whales glide by me in the water and I was able to stand next to Bono as he sang from his heart and he and I stood in front of 60,000 people. I was a mild U2 fan before Wednesday; I’m a huge fan now! I was always a huge fan of National Geographic anything and Digital 3D takes that experience to a higher level.
I would happily pay a premium to go see concerts, National Geographic specials, and sporting events in Digital 3D. It enhances the plot!
