‘The Proposal’ Leads Tuesday

The Proposal led the box office on Tuesday with a solid daily gross of $4.66 million. With the arrival of Paramount’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen today, yesterday’s performance will mark the last day at the top of the box office for the romantic comedy from Disney. However, with the Sandra Bullock vehicle skewing heavily towards female audiences, The Proposal could hold up better against Transformers 2 than most other films in wide release will over the next few days. The Proposal was unchanged from Monday, and has grossed an impressive $42.94 million in its first five days in theatres.

The Hangover remained in second place on Tuesday, but slowed down some, especially by its lofty standards. The blockbuster comedy from Warner Bros. grossed $3.49 million for the day, which was down 8 percent from Monday. The Hangover was down 37 percent from last Tuesday, which suggests that the film took a significant hit yesterday from the midnight screenings of Transformers 2 (which will be counted towards today’s opening day gross). Nevertheless, The Hangover cleared the $160 million mark yesterday, in just its 19th day of release.

Disney’s UP held up nicely once again yesterday. The acclaimed computer animated film was up 4 percent from Monday and down just 27 percent from last Tuesday, which represented one of the day’s better holds among wide releases. UP grossed $2.91 million for the day, bringing the film’s 26-day total to $231.97 million. When UP crosses the $250 million mark in the very near future, it will become the fourth Pixar release to reach that milestone without adjusting for ticket price inflation (joining Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and Monsters, Inc.).

After a very solid hold on Monday, Sony’s Year One was down a troubling 22 percent on Tuesday. Like The Hangover, Year One was already experiencing the effects of the midnight screenings for Transformers 2. The PG-13 comedy starring Jack Black and Michael Cera opened with a solid $8.46 million on Friday, but has fallen off very quickly in the days since then. Year One has grossed $23.82 million in five days, but will continue to fall off quickly in the days ahead.

Fox’s Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian experienced one of the day’s stronger holds once again on Tuesday. The sequel starring Ben Stiller was up 8 percent from Monday and down 28 percent from last Tuesday. Night at the Museum 2 has grossed $158.31 million in 33 days of release.

While no official grosses for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will be released until tomorrow, according to early estimates, the highly anticipated sequel got off to a very strong start in last night’s midnight screenings. Check back tomorrow for a full update on the film’s opening day performance.
