‘Citizen’ #1 as ‘Wild Things’ Falls

Overture’s Law Abiding Citizen jumped two spots and 6 percent from Monday to top Tuesday’s daily box office. Yesterday’s first place finish of $1.802 million for Law Abiding Citizen out-paced Paramount’s Paranormal Activity by $16,151 for the day and marked the first time that the action-thriller has led the daily box office in its five days of release. The R-rated film starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler continues to exceed expectations and is likely benefiting from serving as a more mainstream alternative to both Paranormal Activity and Where the Wild Things Are. Law Abiding Citizen has grossed $24.55 million thus far.

For the second straight day Paranormal Activity had to settle for a very close second place performance. The break-out horror film grossed $1.786 million on Tuesday, which was down 9 percent from Monday and up a strong 67 percent from last Tuesday. Paranormal Activity continues to post especially impressive per-location averages, as it averaged $2,350 for the day from 760 locations. Paranormal Activity has grossed $36.93 million in 26 days and should remain very strong this coming weekend when it expands into wide release.

Warner’s Where the Wild Things Are slid two spots and 11 percent from Monday to place in third with $1.757 million. The Spike Jonze directed adaptation of the popular children’s book experienced the day’s sharpest daily decline among wide releases, though it should be noted that family films as a whole fell off from Monday. Where the Wild Things Are has grossed a solid $36.43 million in five days, but could fall off rather quickly in the weeks ahead given the opening weekend rush-out of its pre-existing fanbase and the ongoing debate as to whether or not the film is too scary for younger children.

Couples Retreat remained in fourth place with $1.20 million. Universal’s PG-13 comedy starring Vince Vaughn was up 11 percent from Monday, but still down a notable 53 percent from last Tuesday. Couples Retreat has grossed $64.90 million through 12 days of release, placing it 17 percent behind the pace of 2006’s The Break-Up. Just how well Couples Retreat holds up this weekend will be a key factor as to whether or not it will cross the $100 million mark domestically.

Zombieland rounded out the day’s top five with $0.62 million. Sony’s R-rated horror comedy was up 4 percent from Monday and down 50 percent from last Tuesday. Although Zombieland is holding up very well for its genre and having a strong run as a whole, it has clearly taken a hit from the new films currently in the marketplace and the expansion of Paranormal Activity. Zombieland has grossed $61.85 million in 19 days and could stabilize once again as Halloween nears.
