'Paranormal' Set to Grab Top Spot

posted October 24, 2009 8:10 AM

The reign of the Saw franchise appears to be over. Paramount's Paranormal Activity is on pace to top the sixth installment in Lionsgate's profitable horror franchise this weekend. PA is turning out to be a true juggernaut, and it could ultimately reach the $100 million plateau.

Only $1 million could end up standing between the two films as they continue to battle it out for the attention of horror enthusiasts this weekend. If it weren't for the presence of PA, then Saw VI would easily finish in first place this weekend. The series will remain highly successful going into next year's Saw VII in 3D.

Word has obviously spread that Spike Jonze made a big-budget art film with Where the Wild Things Are, because mainstream audiences simply are not responding that well. The Warner Bros. release will fall around 60 percent during its sophomore frame.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant and Astro Boy will both end up posting mediocre debut hauls this weekend. Vampire's Assistant looks to finish in sixth place, while Astro Boy could land in seventh place. The two films may have directly hurt each other since they both are aimed primarily at teenage boys.

After receiving a rush of negative reviews, Amelia looks as though it will finish outside of the top 10 this weekend. That's a disappointing opening for a film that looked like a major Oscar contender on paper.

Check back tomorrow for studio weekend estimates.
