'Paranormal' Tops 'Saw VI'

posted October 25, 2009 8:39 AM

According to studio weekend estimates, Paranormal Activity was able to easily trump Saw VI at the box office this weekend. Horror fans across the country made it quite clear that they were in the mood for something new this weekend. PA grabbed an estimated $22 million, while Saw VI could only muster $14.8 million.

PA's cumulative gross is nearly $63 million, which means that hitting the $100 million plateau is a realistic goal at this point.

Lionsgate has to be disappointed with Saw VI's performance, considering that it raked in less than half of what Saw V did during its debut frame in October 2008. The franchise may still be able to return to form next year when the seventh installment is released in 3D.

Two other newcomers seemed to cancel each other out this weekend. Astro Boy debuted in sixth place with an underwhelming $7 million, while Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant was able to grab only $6.3 million. Both films were vying for the attention of teenage males, but they were unable to deliver significant results.

After being hit with a wave of negative reviews, Amelia posted a mediocre estimated haul of a little more than $4 million. The Fox Searchlight release is shaping up to be one of the bigger disappointments of the fall season.

Where the Wild Things Are suffered an unhealthy 56 percent drop during its sophomore frame. Mainstream audiences are simply not responding in a genuinely positive way to the meditative film, and it should continue to fall at a steady pace.

Overall box office receipts should equal around $120 million this weekend, which puts it 11.2 percent below the same weekend last year. 2009's total domestic haul is currently 7.4 percent ahead of 2008's at the exact point in the year.

Check back tomorrow for weekend actuals.
