This is a wretched little movie with no reason to exist. "The Long Weekend" portends to be in the mode of a few recent brighter-than-they-look dumb comedies like "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Shallow Hal," but it has a good deal more in common with any given actually dumb comedy ("Freddy Got Fingered," etc.). It's crude beyond -- and generally without -- reason; it's stupid well outside the boundaries of the kind of stupid that's sometimes funny; and it's mean. What's worse, it's nonsensical. The plot makes no sense; everything is fodder for one tasteless joke or another and little else.

Brothers Ed (Brendan Fehr) and Cooper (Chris Klein) spend a long weekend attempting to get Ed laid and Cooper laid some more. The sex jokes are tackier than you are thinking right now. So are the toilet jokes and bodily function jokes and gay jokes. All tacky, but only tacky. Which is unacceptable. There is a plot point that relates to Ed's obsession with home video. He was the sort of kid who videotaped everything, which turns out to be animals, human and otherwise, defecating, fornicating and hurting themselves. Often quite seriously. The reference is dropped about a quarter of the way through the film, then is picked up again at the end. It is unclear whether this makes the film better or worse. There's also a story about Ed losing his job in advertising if he doesn't win back the big client, while Cooper obliviously keeps trying to get him laid. None of which matters in the least. Lastly, Brendan Fehr and Chris Klein are both terrible. They have no comic timing, either with each other or the ill-conceived material.
