Yellowstone

If a ranger's tour and spiel on Yellowstone Park were made into a movie, it would be much like this new IMAX film. Breathtaking and informative, "Yellowstone" will make viewers want to visit the real thing. However, the ante has been upped so many times by other giant-screen movies like "Titanica" and "Wings of Courage," which have added more plot and personality to the IMAX mix, that this film feels like a step down in its return to the travelogue genre. There isn't much of a story or theme to it, except for the park's history, which is conveyed via voiceover and via pantomiming actors garbed in period costume.
Toward the end, we meet a few researchers, one of whom has lowered a video camera down the popular Old Faithful geyser, providing a sequence that "Journey to the Center of the Earth" fans will enjoy. The animals presented in the film make for good subjects, and the moviemakers even capture a real stampede, unlike those found in "The Lion King" and "Juras-sic Park." Nature lovers and children will like this movie, but those viewers who have already visited Yellowstone Park for themselves will probably yearn for something more. Directed and written by Kieth Merrill. Produced by Richard James and Kieth Merrill. An IMAX release. Documentary. Unrated. Running time: 35 min
