Forever Strong

This so-called sporting life
A queasy mixture of Generic Teen Athlete Movie and “there’s no such thing as a bad kid” uplift, overlaid with a veneer of father/son angst and some New Zealand mysticism(!), director Ryan Little’s look at high school rugby subculture is the kind of film that gives the word “forgettable” a bad name. Solid performances by a better-than-necessary cast can’t save a story that was laughably clichéd and cornball when it was first filmed with Spencer Tracy and the Dead End Kids; commercial prospects seem necessarily wispy, although given the fact that rugby is (we are assured) the fastest-growing sport in the U.S., this could conceivably find a niche in home video.
Sean Faris (who comes off here as a roadshow version of the young Tom Cruise) stars as Rick Penning, a teen jock/party animal who seemingly has it all—good looks, a hot girlfriend, a father (Neal McDonough) who coaches his high school rugby team, and a devoted mom (Julie Warner) who doesn’t seem all that upset when he racks up his second DUI and gets shipped off to an out-of-state juvenile detention center. Upon arrival, he’s befriended by prison warden Marcus Tate (Sean Bean) who offers him the chance to shorten his stay and make it back to school in time for the playoffs; the catch is that he has to join a rival team, Highland Rugby, whose coach (Gary Cole as the real life Larry Gelwix) is one of those annoying sticklers for honor, discipline and no sex before a game. Rick is reluctant at first, but Gelwix ultimately wins him over, and after the usual highjinx and tribulations—including the surprise death of a teammate (yes, there’s actually a Gipper character, although thankfully nobody actually says “win one” for him) —the whole thing winds up in a climactic clash between Highland and Rick’s old teammates (who we know are evil because they drink a lot of beer) with a crowd of hundreds in attendance.
Screenwriter David Pliler doesn’t even really try to breathe life into the stock characters and situations, and director Little doesn’t add much to the proceedings either; the big game finale is underwhelming emotionally (blink and you’ll miss the reconcilliation between Rick and his clueless tight-ass dad) and visually somewhere between incoherent and inert. There’s also a perfunctory romance between Rick and a teammate’s good-looking sister (by perfunctory we mean he gets a peck on the cheek at the end) and, in the film’s one teensy stab at originality, the Highland players break into the lingo and dance routines of 19th-century Maori warriors seemingly at the drop of a hat. Mostly that comes across as unintentionally amusing, but the film is otherwise so dull that by the third or fourth time the kids start doing guttural native chants you’ll probably be grateful for the laughs.

This review is uncalled for and should be removed.
We saw this movie today and LOVED IT!
It's based on a real life story, the characters were believeable, the actors were excellent, and we left the movie wishing we'd brought our kids with us! I can't wait to buy it when it comes out on DVD.
More movies should be like this. We went into it not knowing anything about Rigby, but being big football fans we were easily converted. It had action, drama, nice good comedy which is something that is seriously lacking in recent movies.
I want more movies like this!!!

this review is so far off base, it's ridiculous! This isn't a fabricated story that a filmmaker conceived in his mind. This is based upon real events. I left this movie feeling satisfied and uplifted. I wish there were more movies like this in Hollywood. It sounds like the critic believes a movie isn't good unless there's more drama and sex than this movie portrayed. I loved it, and will definitely be purchasing this movie when it comes out.

I've seen it twice now. Took my 12 year old and his friend the second time. (Had to drag them away from the video games) They loved the movie.
Instead of relying on the word of a frustrated film studies major, I recommend people to go see the film. Write your own review.

This review is so far from the truth its funny. This guy should get a real job away from being a teenage drama bitch who is so bipolar in his emotions you'd swear he just got his first period.

I don't think this rerviewer would ever give a good review to any sports movie. I wonder what little world he lives in. Granted, all sports movies can be a little cheezy but sometimes you have to look past that and see what things the movie does for you. This movie was entertaining and taught alot of family and moral values. It showed people can change for the better but many times it takes some tough decisions by an individual along with some real soul searching. The movie shows how you can change the life in others by being a good friend or a mentor. This film teaches forgiveness doesn't come easy but when it does it truly frees the soul. Great movie for young kids to see because their is so many life lessons covered in its 112 minutes. As an old rugby player we love the "Haka" chant. I have seen it done up close and personal and it gives you goose bumps. Apparently, the reviewer must have gone out for a sucker when they translated what the words and message of the "Haka" were. Go see the movie !!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

WOW! Great movie! We didn't agree with this review at all! We took our children ages 10 - 18 and their friends to this movie. They all loved the movie and talked about it all the way home! I would loved to see it again. Too bad there aren't more movies like this that cause you to stop and think about life.

I'll have to agree with the rest of the posts. I saw this movie on opening night and thought it was great. Should there have been more sex and vulgarity to make this a real "good" high school-based movie? Sorry to disappoint you, but this film was not made in Hollywood, and therefore didn't have that weak foundation that so many other movies use as the only selling point. I don't think it would be appropriate to make personal jabs at the writer of this review, but I also think it's necessary that I voice my opinion as unanimous with the rest of those who have commented by saying this movie was GREAT and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an inspiring true story. But that's only if you want to see a story about "one of those annoying sticklers for honor, discipline and no sex before a game" (because apparently that's frowned upon), then go see this movie.

The reviewer saw through the smoke and mirrors!
Here's what is conveniently left out of "Forever Strong"
In 2008, (6) amazing import rugby players from New Zealand played on the Highland Rugby squad, while local boys sat on the bench. Played for two months, won a national championship and then were quietly sent home. As were their rugby brothers every year for the past 14 years.
Conveniently on purpose, left out because the high moral story then becomes clouded in issues related to why HR recruits players from NZ every year.
Highland uses the Maori Haka, Kia Kaha and and the national sport of NZ yet fails to acknowledge the critical annual contribution of the boys from the land of the long white cloud.
Pretend students kicked out of the Utah public school system in 2005.
Now there is a great story !!!!
A movie about:
the New England Patriots without Tom Brady
The Green Bay Packers without Brett Farr
The Tour de France without mentioning Lance Armstrong
then go and see Forever Strong.
Not one word of dialog, a scene or reference to the phantom players from New Zealand.
Used and forgotten.
There is a picture in the credits
Sorry .....kiwi boys for not giving you a role in the movie
But ....see you next season
Religion saves the main character in the movie, but where is the religion in leaving out the most important element of this so called true story.
What would Jesus do?
So much for building character....but HR got the WINS?
I guess the end justifies the means.
Read the facts for yourself ...

Enjoyed this show a ton. Was it technical perfection? No. But it sure was nice to see somebody stand for something.
As far as Ra and the baloney of "highlandrugbythetruth", sour grapes have been going on for years about Highland but what is said there is not true.

This is a great show, one of the best I have seen in a while. It was even better because it was family friendly and clean. Taught many important lessons, probably one of the best shows I have seen about the effects of alcohol in someone's life. I really enjoyed the show!

I think RA must have been cut from the team... Poor RA...
I thought the movie was excellent. A good family film. A good story. It was well made and very entertaining. Of course it was predictable, but what sports movies aren't? This review was one person's opinion. From all the comments here it looks like he has been cancelled out. This is a film that comes highly recommended by me.

In response to Ra. My nephew played on the team and isn't Maori or from New Zeland. There are Mouris who live in the area and whose kids play sports. If you have ill feelings towards this team or this coach then maybe there is some jealousy or prejudice involved. Just because they are Mouri doesn't mean they deserve any less respect than any other player. PS I am not Mouri either.
If, and I mean If students were kicked out of the public school system. This does not mean they were even on the team and if they were it does not mean the coach knew anything about it. He never got into trouble for illegal recruiting. Get the facts strait and stop your ranting.

Incredible that the reviewer ahould find such distaste in the core principles and values that are so desperately needed in our society. Finally a movie that had the courage to unashamably present a wonderful positive message. (FOREVER STRONG) So glad that my teenage boy watched it with me (and loved it) I suggest that the reviewer take a look at the lack of core values we have in our real life - not really working is it.

After reading this review then all the dissenting comments, I recall to mind the cliché: "No one ever built a monument to a critic." Thankfully, creative people will continue making a great impact on the world while critics like these will continue to eek out their miserable living—never to be known or respected.

I can't believe that anyone parent or adult how cares about a positive message for today's children could have anything but positive remarks to say about this movie. I work with teens of both sexes and they WILL watch this movie! It was the BEST! Wow! How refreshing it is to see a decent movie come out.
