Miracle at St. Anna

Lee provides an ambitious, yet slightly unfocused, take on WWII with Miracle
A different face of World War II is shown in Miracle at St. Anna, a very entertaining yet uneven piece from director Spike Lee. Following four black soldiers as they fight their way through enemy territory to return to neutral ground, the film is a strange hybrid of several different movies rolled into one. Clocking in at over two and a half hours, the journey is worth the time investment, but may not be embraced by the masses due to length and structure.
Lee has always been an innovator with films like Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X, but it was not until Inside Man, his most commercial movie, that he was able to break into the mainstream. While it's great to have more people discover his work, it's even better to know that commercial success hasn't changed his filmmaking style. Lee has always relished coloring outside the lines, never shying away from taboo material or taking the easy way out. Sometimes it works to great effect (25th Hour) and sometimes it doesn't (Girl 6), but his artistic failures are infinitely more enjoyable than the "successes" of more cookie-cutter directors.
The film opens with a murder mystery as a black postal worker shoots another man for reasons are not revealed upfront. The shooting leads to a police investigation that uncovers a lost and extremely valuable Italian artifact at the gunman's home. From here the story shifts back to 1944 Tuscany where the gunman is one of a group of four Buffalo Soldiers lost from their unit and trying to find their way to safe territory. Sgt. Aubrey Stamps (Derek Luke) is the leader, Sgt. Bishop Cummings (Michael Ealy) is the opportunist, Cpl. Hector Negron (Laz Alonso) is the level-headed fighter and Pvt. Sam Train (Omar Benson Miller) is the teddy bear overflowing with compassion and heart.
It's Pvt. Train's semi-emotional scenes with a young rescued Italian boy that sometimes threaten to derail Miracle at St. Anna. There is gruesome violence in this picture, as the war scenes are worthy of their hard-R rating, but the decision to balance out the chaos with heart results in some of the film's most cringe-worthy dialogue by screenwriter James McBride.
Miracle at St. Anna is more akin to another interesting Spike Lee misfire, She Hate Me not in subject matter, but in tone and story structure. Both films hover around two and a half hours and are bloated with so much extra material that each literally feels like two very different movies in one. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but Miracle at St. Anna in particular feels like a mystery and war epic rolled into one. It's always engaging, but the constant tonal shifts sometimes disjoint what should have been a seamless narrative.

That's too bad that this is a "misfire", though I think Spike Lee is more apt to misfire than fire on all cylinders. Inside Man was such a good movie from Lee that I was really hoping lightning could strike twice, and the trailer for this looks amazing to me. I'l probably still check this out though.

I saw the movie this evening. It's the best Spike Lee Joint to date in my opinion. This reviewer must have seen a different movie than the one I saw. It was funny and poignant at the same time. This film will make you laugh, make you angry and make you cry at different parts of it. It will also make you think. It's very well acted and the story line has some twists that you won't see coming. I don't see the "misfire." I think Spike was firing on all cylinders and using high octane gas to get the job done.

Censorship is bad said:
I myself don't believe in censorship of any kind whatsoever. If you have prepared your child for life he should be ready for anything a movie screen can throw at him. Seeing fictional violence doesn't warp a child if they can see the context. Nudity and sex don't either. The worst thing I would worry about is if the movie is good or not. Not that your child might see a naked human body. Not to sound like some hippy or anything but the human form is beautiful and enjoyable on many different levels. Let the kid see what he wants.

Saw the film this evening. I definitely enjoyed it though as the reviewer says, it was quite unfocused. Just to warn you all, the ending was pretty stupid. Other than that, I was a fan.

The ending almost ruined a really good film. I thought the film was great until I saw that shmaltzy, silly, ridiculous, 1st year at director school ending. What, did run out of ideas once they got to the end?

Great movie, it it was a typical Spike Lee movie. More concerned with making a point and starting a debate than giving a good show. But overall it was an amazing movie. The ending was one of the few down points.

What critics giving very bad reviews to Spike Lees unfocused, 3 hour meandering WWII film don't understand that in Spike Lee's urban, Black Ebonics culture "bad" means "Good". So everyone commenting how "Bad" this movie is are just giving Spike Lee more street credibility as the "baddest" Black artists in America today.
There is no reason to see all 3 hours of this Spike Lee movie to agree that yes:
The movie is very, very bad.
Spike Lee is a bad film director
Spike Lee is a very bad person, he hates White people, hates Italians, hates all things America, things American history is an endless history of bad White people doing bad things to good Black African Americans....
Oh, maybe I have that wrong, as that would imply that White Americans are "bad", hip, cool, with the street cred and Spike Lee is the goody goody that got pushed around by tough bad Italian neighborhoods in Brooklyn.

I have never been a Spike Lee movie fan....
They just never clicked for me.
I'm not implying that he is a bad director or anything. It's just never been my cup of tea.
Spike Lee is a Brilliant man with amazing ideals.
He has a unique way of expressing his feelings, history, etc. Not implying that he is right nor wrong. In the same instance it is a free country to express yourself in many ways. His choice is through movies. He is somewhat an independent director with a story to tell....so just listen. If you can stand harshness, graphic nature, and everything else that comes along with a Spike Lee movie.
This movie Clicked for me!!!!!!!
It was amazing in so many ways. I loved every part of this movie and I'm sure many others feel the same way that I do. He had an amazing cast, that you would have never thought would mesh so well together. To me this is the best movie of the year. I laughed, I cried, and made me angry all in one.
I suggest that people go out and see this movie and give Spike the support he deserves on "this" one.

I love this movie! I've seen it last night and I've been telling everybody about it since I walked out of the theater. This film prove that Spike Lee is very intelligent and from these reviews it shows that he is an underrated director. In addition, I am upset that my city Columbia, SC has 10 theater and only two show this movie. Everybody needs to give it the respect that it deserves. I can't wait to add this to my DVD collection.

People are criticizing the end of the film, but fail to mention that even the ending was set up by the very beginning of the movie. Spike does an outstanding job on this film. I believe that much of white america is in denial about their racist past so anything that speaks from a Black perspective is viewed as wrong headed, unfocused. the film was very layered, coming from six different directions and it was all managed very well by both Spike Lee and James McBride. Not simply a "setting the record straight" treatise on WWII, Miracle also persuaded dialogue, criticism, and debate about the past. Read various reviews from different sites and you will see that much of the criticism of the film are personal gripes with Lee himself. This is an excellent film and minus the judgment of others, there is only two short scenes of nudity.

The ending was not bad...how else did you expect him to end it... I always love reviews because you non-directing, non-creative people give opinions based upon no knowledge of how to bring a story together. It was an awesome film. I am so glad that Mr. Lee was able to put it in his repetoire which is so incredible in itself. I will have to alert all my friends to go and see it before they pull it out of theaters again, just because the numbers are not high within the first week.

Spike you are a genius in this movie, and if people could just see the injustice of these brave soldiers and then enjoy the movie. Folks you just missed this one,by not supporting this weekend movie. You should have been number #1 in the numbers at the box office but you surely are number one in my book.

This was an awesome film! I have not stopped talking about it and urging others to go and support!
I'm not a war film fan, so I was at first a little apprehensive, but Spike has done it like no other.
And to those who constrict their reality, losing opportunities to learn and benefit from the cinematic genius of Spike's philosphy which incorporates both spiritual and intellectual,to those who "review" the film from a linear presentation, I am just sorry that YOU are unable to experience the film for what it is worth! I laughed, cried, was angry, sat on the edge of my seat, and bonded with a stranger sitting next to me, of a different race at that! Now in my book that is what good art is suppossed to do!
THANK YOU SPIKE! YOU are Truly a GIANT

I read all the reviews and I come down on the side of "what was that all about?" I just couldn't put everything together. The ending was "cheesy". This is the first Spike Lee I've seen. I don't know that I try again. It was just too much of everything.

I've seen the movie. In my opinion the movie was very entertaining with a bit of education that the american viewers needed. The movie and the book are both very expressive and graphic. Most people that I talked with have no clue of the role of the Buffalo Soldiers in WWII. Spike's movie is the only attempt by any major director to educate the public on such a unpopular segment of WWII. The movie was very heartfelt and filled with a touch of genius that only Spike Lee could pull off!
Many Thanks to you my brother.

I loved thismovie. It provoked deep thought and was VERY entertaining throughout. I am not on either side of the Spike Lee fence and I have enjoyed some of his films and not really enjoyed others but this was a classic to me. I left entertained, intruiged, moved, and wanting to see it again. For those that say it is too long and too busy and too unorganized... my humble opinion is that those comments are simply based on a movie that is so deep and rich and entertaining it is a challenge to take it all in and understand it all the first time. I for one like that and any movie that challenges the thought and emotion of its viewer. I loved it.

This movie was awesome. If I had followed what the reviews said, i would never had gone to see this movie. I agree some parts of it was too exaggerated but overall it was funny, educative and almost made me cry. The ending was perfect. Anybody that didn`t think the ending was good was probly not following the movie.
This movie is a must see.

I just saw this movie at the local discount theatre. It should of stayed in the regular theatre alot longer. It was an awesome movie. I have seen about every movie out this year and this one is at the top of my pick for a really good movie. The cast should get an award. This movie was very entertainig and educational.I liked it from the beginning to the last scene. I was really surprised it was two and half hours long.It went by very quickly. I was inspired to rush home and read all the reviews. This movie was everything a wonderful movie should be. I thought all the story lines were meshed together really well to tell the whole story, including the ending. I hope Mr. Lee will get acknowledged
