High School Musical 3: Senior Year
posted October 23, 2008 11:50 AM
Latest High School Musical deserves a failing grade
I am 29 years old and High School Musical 3: Senior Year is not a movie made for my age group. I feel an obvious fact such as this has to be stated upfront since people will likely condemn and/or defend the following review. The ones defending my trashing of the popular kids series won’t have a clue what all the fuss is about or simply won’t care. The ones calling me Satan for daring to make fun of Zac Efron and his pedestrian acting chops will most likely be 12-year-old girls. Either way, the hopeful conclusion of High School Musical 3 has all of the series’ familiar faces take their exaggerated adventures to the big screen for the first time. Because of the built-in audience and screaming tween-aged fans, High School Musical 3 is almost guaranteed to make a boatload of money at the box office, no thanks to clueless critics like me.
Zac Efron. Vanessa Hudgens. Ashley Tisdale. Corbin Bleu. If these names mean anything special to you and you’re over 18, there’s a good chance you’re not in high school and a better chance you’re a fan of bad musicals—two things this movie wears like a badge of honor. Efron, who headlines the ensemble cast, is 21 but is playing an 18-year-old high school senior. It’s not the end of the world, older actors have been doing this for ages. But when Efron follows in the monotone footsteps of Freddie Prinze Jr. (another twentysomething used to playing high school seniors back in the day), it’s not a good sign. Ditto the film’s cheesy one-note plot revolving around a group of friends dealing with their last year in high school while planning for college, dating and—yes— putting on a musical. Most of the film is set in a fantasy world that doesn’t resemble reality in the slightest—but that may be the point. After all, the High School Musical series started out on television and received acclaim through the acceptance of young and giddy teenage girls. The last time I checked, I was an old and jaded male. Big difference.
I’m not completely out of touch with High School Musical 3: I know there’s an audience for popcorn fluff where cardboard characters say the most clichéd things and only make things worse when they literally stop mid-sentence to break out into a painful song and dance. Will Troy (Efron) and Gabriella (Hudgens) stay together even though she has a scholarship to Stanford and he can barely graduate? Will Sharpay (Tisdale) get over herself and realize that bratty blondes like her are a dime a dozen in the real world? Will Chad (Bleu) realize that his hairdo looks like a box of curly fries? Trying to answer these silly questions might help you pass the time during this mess of a movie.
If you’re a fan of the series and are planning on seeing High School Musical 3, I won’t stop you. I’ll confess that I was the only one in the theatre not screaming my head off when Efron appeared onscreen. I’m very proud of that fact, but others might disagree. On the other hand, if you have no interest in this piece of pop entertainment, I can’t urge you enough to stay as far away as possible. The swarms of young girls watching this phenomenon opening weekend will eat you alive.

I don't think you're giving the movie enough credit for what it's worth. You're 29, OBVIOUSLY you're not going to enjoy a musical that's targeted to younger Disney-channel watching kids. And for that audience, the movie was great.

While the age group comment is valid, I still think that this movie hold little to no value even for those frighteningly giddy little girls who enjoy it. All this movie does is reinforce overly-positive stereotypes (a practice that has kept Disney in business for a long long time) and completely hides from any possible issue that any real person might have to deal with. However much these pre-teens might enjoy this movie it does not hold 'value' for them any more than Friday the Thirteenth over 9000 did for those who like such pointless horror movies. This franchise was overdone before even the second movie came out by the first movie and by almost every show on the Disney channel and Nickelodeon. It is nothing more than another brainless cash-cow made by the Disney company.

This movie is one of Disney's many excuses for "good stuff" right besides Miley Cyrus and some other crap. I've seen both the previous movies and do not plan on watching this though I'm not gonna hear the end of this from the 13 year old teenage girls.

You are a jerk. I took my daughters to the movie today and I am 32 years old. The average age in that theatre today was older than me. There was more than one man in the theatre and there was one man who was around 70. Obviously, it takes a real man to get in touch with his inner feelings. I hope you grow up a little before you decide to get married and have children because in real life you will have to be a part of things you don't want to and do things that you feel are right for others. I think people like you should remember what our grandmothers taught us - If you don't have anything nice to say, than don't say anything at all. If you don't want anything to do with HSM3, then why are you wasting your time complaining about it? You must have had some interest in it, at lease enough that you read what it was about or are you jealous of how good Troy looks being only 8 years younger than you are? Spend time doing something else - like working.

Also, to THATGUY
What do you think movies are made for? They are for entertainment. They don't have to follow things that happen in real life. That would be boring. Disney does a great job of thinking outside the box. They are making millions because they are doing it better than most people and definitely better than you or me. If you could make movies better than others than why aren't you? Or do you already have millions of dollars and don't need to? We all want to reach for the stars and dream big. If not, then what do we have to look forward to in life. Disney must not be too brainless. They have the money - do you?

We took our 7 year old daughter and our 3 year old son to the movie this afternoon. The movie was sold out at the 1:30 matinee. There were a lot of older folks there as well as other dad's. Being a dad, 37, and having seen the other two HSM's a dozen times while working around the house, I thought the third was better than the other two. The movie was a little more serious, almost caught myself a little teary eyed a few times. My wife said the same during and after the movie. HSM fans won't be disappointed. The songs were great and our daughter loved it.

Dear Marcos Cerritos...sorry you feel this way about feel good positive movies. Children and adults need an escape from the serious and trying times out there. They need to keep dreaming and remain positive and that is Disney's intents with feel good movies. What film is not set in a fantasy world that does not resemble reality (unless it is a biography or autobiography). Movies are an escape from reality!! Your comments where stating the obvious but turning them into something negative. I'd be curious to see what kind of realistic movies you watch!!

Those harping on the critic for his negative review with comments such as, "if you don't like it ,THEN DON'T WATCH IT!" or "if you don't have anything nice to say, than don't say anything at all" should know it is this critic's job to go out and watch movies, whether he likes them or not, and give his review on them. It doesn't matter if it's meant for his age group or even if doesn't suit his personal style. He's also paid to say "not nice" things if he didn't like what he saw.
Also, the "if you don't like it ,THEN DON'T WATCH IT!" comments don't make sense. How would he have known if he would actually dislike the movie before he watched it? It's a little too late to tell someone, who has watched a movie and not liked it, to not watch it. Good luck to those critics who can travel back in time. If only we can all get back those precious hours we had lost in watching things we didn't like.
A lot of these commentators sound personally offended by this critic's review. Why the hostility? He said his piece - you disagree. That's fine. It's your right to disagree, even vent your passion about the movie. Considering this critic may not have had a choice in watching the movie, I understand his negative response.
Personally, I am looking forward to seeing HSM3 and I'm pretty certain I will enjoy it tremendously. This critic's review isn't going to change my mind. But it's obviously bothering enough people to slander him with nonsensical rhetoric. I'd venture to say, "if you don't have anything nice to say (about the review), then don't say anything at all", but that impedes on basic human rights and free speech and doesn't promote discussion.
Perhaps it's a case of the pot calling the kettle black. It sure looks that way to me.

Wow, some of you people really need to grow up. I agree with Aeka entirely. How can someone say that they don't like something if they have no knowledge of it? They obviously have to watch it at least once to decide if they do or they don't. After seeing it once, he will probably decide not to watch it ever again. So really, calm down people because you don't realize how silly you are making yourselves look. If you don't agree with what he wrote then that is fine, we are all entitled to our personal opinion and this just so happened to be his. Obviously it is not going to change your opinion on the movie if you seen and liked it so why bother leaving such comments?
Really you are all just wasting your time if you think about it, he isn't going to change his opinion about it and neither are you so just leave it at that. You know that little button in the corner of the screen? You have two choices, either take the little arrow that says back or use the little "x" that means close, pretty simple.
Personally, I would also like to see this movie since I agreed that the other two were nice and just because I read this guy's opinion doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to change my mind and not go see it. He has the right of freedom of speech just as you do. If you don't like what you see then instead of wasting your time posting such pointless comments why don't you go and write a review yourself about how great you think it is? Or maybe just go and do something better with your time.

I'm 27 years old, right there in your age group. I was going to see this on opening night and even made arrangements for my 2 little ones to be babysit, but plans fell through and *gasp* I had to see it the next day. None the less, I love HSM 1, 2, & 3. Yes I've spoken to a lot of people my age who do not like it, but I love any movie that has a solid love story in it - regardless of the age group. And I love this movie, a lot.
The movie is great for the teenagers of this time period, providing solid examples of how to treat others who are different and how to work together. While some of it is over the top, what movie isn't, I like the overall message that the movie projects and I can watch this movie with my 2 little ones when they get older without any issue. Oh, and can I say I love the music and dancing? Yes I love these kinds of movies -- I just enjoyed it for what it was. Wasn't trying to discover the meaning of life through this movie.
There were both young girls and guys in the theater and many parents too, which I'm sure they appreciated this good feel movie, over a horror or violence packed movie. I think the only way we are going to see real criticism for this movie, is from those who would typically enjoy this type of movie. Not from someone not even remotely into this type of movie, with singing and dancing, and just all over cliches of mass proportions -- which I don't mind in a movie and find quite comical to see sometimes.
It is hard to find a movie which I don't like for what it is. I find entertainment in many different movie types. Though having a Netflix subscription, I can say you should go watch those 2 star rated movies and you'll find something truly horrendous to write about. The fact that you've written anything about this movie, speaks volumes in the way that it was worth something to you to write about.
Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents (more like 1 dollar at this length) at you and others who are reading your comments. We are all different and have different tastes.
* As for some of the commentators, you guys need to get used to others having a different opinion than you and not name call the writer or others for their different opinion. The writer was just expressing themselves, which he is allowed to do. Help him expand his knowledge by informing him you own personal opinion, not by bashing him.*

I am 18 and haven't seen the movie.
I have seen the other 2, and yes, they are not the greatest product in hollywood/disney history.
Because don't forget, movies like Pirates and others are Disney as well.
But I more have a question for the critic.
I completely understand him not liking this movie. He probably is a guy who loves good solid acting and story movies, who can blame him?
But what I wonder is, if he puts himself in somebodies shoes that LOVES musicals, dancing, feel good, no thinking about the plot entertainment, then what would he think about this movie?
It's not a master picture peace, but it IS probably a great and perfect movie for who it's ment for.
So my question is: Why didn't you just say it's not the best movie for people who don't like this stuff, but that it is probably amazing and perfect for people that do?
But I guess we will never know right?
And I agree with Sarah, don't call him names. He is only doing his job, if you want to tell him something be nice and respectfull, he's just another opinion in this world.

Reality check!!! Please people that wrote about how the movie did not resemble reality in high school maybe right. Because the movies that's been out there in the past decade or two for high school or younger kids have highlighted the bad kids and their suffering because of their own doing and their disfunctional families. Well, we've planted that into those kids so you "negative" "older" generation think that is normal. Guess what... it's not. Drama sells and that what producers have been selling. So kids grow up that it's normal to be disfunctional! I think we need more "feel good" movies for the younger generation so parents don't find themselves having to explain all the negativity that they see on film. You maybe older, but you sure haven't grown up. Enjoy your miserable life, you're still in good company with many your age. Sometimes people just want to be entertained at the movies. I'll go to your house and watch your family and friends if I want to see a miserable, angry, hopeless jerks live their lives.

As a reviewer, you look at this unbiasedly. I don't think people commenting here realize this.
Let me just say, I am a huge fan of musicals and Broadway. I took a friend's sister to see this. It's not a good movie or musical, honestly. The songs themselves have no real substance and are just as cliche as the characters. The music is Disney-manufactured and thus not anything really rememberable.
I will give them some credit on a few bits of choreography, however.
I'm not saying that this means you can't enjoy it. It's entertainment, and everyone has different tastes.

Also, IT'S HIS OPINION SO GET OVER THE FACT THAT YOU DISAGREE.
Not to mention, HE IS GETTING PAID TO REVIEW IT! So I'm pretty sure he doesn't care what you think, he's just going to do his job and get paid.
Also, for commenters who repost their comment, most people here aren't blind, or slow in the head. Most logical people would rather see another comment than a 'Bashers of Bashers' and that IS what you do. You bash his opinion because his opinion 'bashes' the movie.
I could continure this but I'm sure that I'd rather do something more time worthy, than point out the idiotic flaws in your argument. Although...I would have fun.. ^-^

Get over it, people! HSM3 may be good for a certain group of ages and maybe for ones higher or lower than this group. And the fame goes trough it all. If you really review this movie in the vision of what you would expect of a really good movie (like good acting, directing, writing...)you'll see that HSM3 it's a simple movie in these criteria, the movie itself is made for the masses and tryes to please everyone that it cans, making it easy to understand and simple to like it or even love it. But again, if you see in other way, you'll se that HSM3 it's not a good movie, at all.

Basically, I think you did a great review. I bet you would probably quite reading the comments so might not even see mine. A review is meant to be critical, and yours was. It gave your opinion, and you expressed it in a humorous manner. I might still go see the movie because I am 17 and all these other people are raving on about it. I am doing what Kiana just did a little above, I guess.
Nice review - adding some positive comments even if you do read them
To everyone out who bashed this guy:
Are you serious? You have got to be kidding. If you choose to use the argument "don't say anything if you can't say anything nice" or "why do you watch the movie if you don't like it" or something else along those lines, your maturity level must be that of a three year olds. Firstly, the job of a critic is to give his opinion. If you do not like his opinion, why did you read it? Well, you have to read it first in order to know whether you like it or not, just like any critic has to watch a movie first in order to decide whether he likes the movie. Secondly, if you do not like his review then don't make mean comments because that would be contradicting yourself with the "don't say anything unless it's nice" argument. Also, if you do choose to disagree. Write a comment that would persuade others to believe your opinion over the critic instead of "HSM3 RULES!!!!!!!!!! If u have anything bad to say then DIE!!!! Or get duck tape and tape it over your ugly mouth." (Sarah(Barbie) is quoted). Finally, do not get on and pretend you are of the opposite sex or really an adult. Your writing is not elegant and has too many exclamation marks or internet speak. I cannot tell you, however, if you act like the opposite sex or not, but I do not care.
P.S. Nice Review
P.P.S. Bring on the hate comments, homophobes.

I just would like to say that I did enjoy the music and dancing in HSM3. Though- the plot lacked a TON and the movie seemed like a bunch of different music videos.
I would not say that it was terrible though. I am usually for the plot...but seeing all the big musical numbers really did amaze me. The singing was also amazing as well.
You go a little over the top on attacking the movie though. You should've known by the High School Musical tag that it isn't your type of movie (by the sound of what you wrote). So I question why you went in the first place. Why did you expect anything more than over the top acting and musical numbers along with a not-so-carefully thought out plot?
If I were to give it a rating- I would at least give it 3 and a half stars. It's a ton of fun, and sometimes that's what we need in movies.
(If you are looking for a movie filled with dancing and crazy overdone musical numbers- and not so worried with a well thought out plot- go and see HSM3 it'll be worth your time and money.)

Response to Kim, responsing Thatguy
First thatguy said it was a cash cow, and you reinforced his statement by saying they would make billions.
Second, he is giving his opinion on a subject, not saying he can do a better job. It takes a special skill to make movies. But coming up with the idea for a movie is easy.
Third, he never said disney is brainless. He said they are giving what the public wants so will make big bucks. That's clever even if it is immoral since the movie encourages false beliefs.
R u really 32? If you are, you must be one of dumbest people alive. If you are a teenager. I can understand. You are just going with the flow.
I could have made a better argument probably but I am tired. If you don't respond before nov 1 Kim it means I win because thats what the rules say. Yay!

Grease and HSM3 fall into the same category. So why can kids not relate to Grease?
Both are musicals in high schools. Both have positive meanings. The only problem with Grease is the smoking. Grease has lots of good values like teamwork, changing yourself to get who you love, and having fun.
What does HSM3 have. DOn't respond by saying it has everything or you are stupid or hot boys. They do not really help your argument.

I really feel bad for critics.
No matter what they say, there's always something rude to say back.
Why? I just don't know. It states what's going to happen with a list of people who are in the movie. The critic agrees, or disagrees about liking it. Then all these people, (mainly women who cling to emotional sad movies and has nothing better to do but complain about something) gets on and complains about how this review sucked.
I enjoyed reading regardless if i concurred with it or not.

We live in a great place to allow opinions to be expressed, but personal attacks have no place in there... even if his initial article may have a few too.
Opinions are valueable for persepective and communal reasons... Does anyone really wants a world where everyone agrees on everything?

Hi!!!! HELLO!!!!!! Reality check Mr. jaded 29 yr old...it's a movie!! A movie made to entertain children, it's fictional not based on fact!! No different that almost any other movie people go to see. Like every day people go on some crazy ass adventure as seen in so many flicks today. GET OVER YOURSELF!!! Personally as a 31 year old mom I thought it was cute (as it should be)and i thought it was appropriate for my 9 yr old. As a mom and lover of good musicals this series of movies has helped me introduce my daughter to the classsics such as The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady, she even enjoyed West Side Story although she was sad about Tony dying. We are going to wait alittle while before bringing Grease around though. My point is this was a very cute movie intended for kids but that can be enjoyed by all with the right frame of mind!1

Two of our familes saw HSM3 along with 6 of our own kids and teenagers (including boys) and 5 of their friends. There were a lot of college-aged men and women there as well as parents. All of the younger movie goers agreed that HSM3 was the best of the series. Honestly, I rated it as being the best I've seen in a theatre in a while. Don't expect a lot of CGI, special effects, sex or violence (must be what makes Marco get his box of stars out). HSM1 and 2 were so efficiently made that it seemed like dialog was added to make it feature length, and introducing three new co-stars (obviously headliners for HSM 4) added humor but were a bit awkward. A little more time with the script would have improved the movie (but then again this fell into the timeframe of the writer's strike). The one thing that interruped our experience was the Cinemark theatre used film rather than DLP, and half of the screen was out of focus. I complained vigerously to the manager/projectionist who appologized and gave us rain checks but didn't fix the focus problem for that showing. (I was a projectionist for many years and thus meticulus about production and presentation quality). The film itself was refreshingly good. We had a great time watching as a family and we'll return to see it again this weekend and will buy HSM3 on Blu-Ray in December. Yes, we bought the soundtrack as well. There really isn't room for sex, violence, CGI or special effects in this movie. It has amazing dancing that's not found in films of this era. My wife LOVED the dancing number with waltzing. The cast have incredible talent for singing and dancing. Given more filming time (very tight film schedule) the acting and story would have been a bit better. Overall, I still rate it 4 of 5 stars (not knocking off anything for focus problems and sub-standard projector color and brightness). Believe me, the majority of movies I see lately I feel are a waste of money. (Wall-E was a total rip off) PG-13 thru R rated movies now days are pieces of crap that are just remakes of other shows with gobs of CGI and special effects that make them watchable. Marco must have to wear a bib to these movies so his shirt isn't wet with drool. HSM3 is filled with incredibly excellent talent, light humor, great escapism back to our high-school days, excellent choreography and messages that we all need to learn - arrogant snobs have feelings too and the true meaning of friendship and love (Hollywood and Marco seems to think everything is about sex).

I get your point, but I wouldn't say it's terrible. The targeted audience is obviously far from your age group, hence the title, "HIGH SCHOOL Musical." Even if it really is sexually toned down compared to live-and-in-color high schools, the music is catchy, and Kenny Ortega is one amazing choreographer. You're right about the hormone-hyped, pre-teen girls, though. If you watch them when Zac Efron comes out, I guarantee at least one of them will giggle and blush, as if he'll marry her someday. Although I haven't paid 10 dollars for a ticket - and an extra 5 or 10 for food to muffle my disappointed cries when I see a bad arabesque - I wouldn't go as far as to say it deserves a failing grade. I think [most of] the actors are...decent, at least. I'm just surprised that no one has commented on how much Hudgens has changed since her little photo scandal. Anyway, enough of my gigantic spiel. I like your writing style.

HA! can't imagine. Besides, age doesnt make any difference. i could swear to u that half the people in the theatre was older than me and no im not 4, i'm 14, or older. and plus, they spent like what 12 hours everyday rehersing for the dance numbers. just cuz u hated hsm3 didnt mean that u could just give it no stars. give them at least some credit for all the songs and dances and acting. ppl like u r the kind that hate clean cut disney movies cuz u prefer things more gruesome cuz thats all u see today. one day shooting, the next day suicide, a little happiness and joy doesnt hurt u know. besides hsm3 did look like something made for movies rather than for tv. efron and all the actors did a much betta job. it even got me teary eyed, and no, i wasnt the only one. u know, its a good thing to have something like hsm today because its a good influence for kids. its what high school should be like. without all those drugs and violence and cussing. u probably just hate hsm cuz ur too occupied with reality. just to be sure, u know that this is a MOVIE and not a documentary right? just checkin. movies r not suppose to be so realistic or else whats the point. i mean look at harry potter. ohhh magic and wands, so realistic right(Sarcasm, if u dont no, which u probably wouldnt)for all u haters out there, i no why u hate it. cuz its too CLEAN CUT and theres no CUSSing cuz thats all u look for to make something a good movie to u guys. guess what? not everyone is like that. some people actually DISLIKE the cussing and violence. that's right, u heard me, DISLIKE cussing. so just give it a rest ppl, hsm3 is NOT bad!!!!

I happen to be a fan of HSM (series).. I love the movie. Zac's 21 yrs old, and I am young. I am 16 yrs old. Yes, HSM might be a little baby-ish.., But a lot of adult/teenagers and grownups watch this. You may not like him.., but do you realize that half of the world loves Zac Efron.... I know this 21 yr old teenager that watches Disney Channel... (Wizards Of Waverley Place, Hannah Montana, etc)... So, it's not a problem. It's a musical. Bringing back Music... Learning that you can be anything you want to be without giving up or changing yourself to fit in. Troy, and Gabriella got a long well. Troy was a basketball Jock.. He plays for the basketball team as well, but he also realized that he enjoys singing... Troy completely changes. Gabriella isn't shy, and she's becoming more independent. Sharpay is still a queen bee, and wants everything, but she wants to go to Julliard. Ryan, wants to major in singing, and dancing.... Zeke wants too cook. Everything's changing. Breaking out of their shell. This movie help teenagers to be them-self. Not somebody else wants them to be. So, I think this movie is a great, and whatever you guys say about HSM, HSM2, HSM 3- Senior Year.. I don't care. But, you are missing out on a chance to see the NUMBER 1 BOX OFFICE MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!! REMEMBER..... NUMBER 1......
Senior Year, is great. A lot of singing, dancing, romance...Most of all MUSIC......

Uhh, HELLO!? That's his job as a critic. Bashing him for giving his opinion, which is his job, is both immature and stupid.
I happen to be a 15 year old girl and I HATE HSM. It's shallow, predictable, and just uncreative. Omg! The jock and the shy nerd get together! Oh noes! The stuck up snobby girl! Gasp! You NEVER see those stereotypes, now do you? T__T
Also, there a many actors who are far more attractive than Zac Efron can ever hope to be. I'm sick of girls fangirling over him. And Vannesa Hudgens is turning into a porn star. So there.
Anyway, their voices sound squeaky and fake, the plot was severely lacking, and the whole HSM franchise in general is just annoying. That's my two cents.
Oh and also, if you want to be taken seriously, please learn how to spell, all you 12 year old Zac fangirls. At least TRY to make sense...

HSM is not annoying, i repeat NOT annoying cuz if it were, then disney wouldve stopped after filming the first hSM. but no, it was so SUCCESSFUL and UNANNOYING, yeah i went there, that they continued to make a second and third one. i no u don't want to admit it, but HSM3 rocked. u probably just hated it cuz u hate HSM in general, and not the movies. and it'll be a disgrace for all the hsm haters that a hater actually said the third movie was pretty good. if their voices were so squeaky, first of all, they would not have passed the auditions, and they would not have made albums of their own. yeah, so stop bashing them and try to read what ur writing, cuz they all dont make sense. yeah, this comment is for morgan

...Oh sorry, I saw Quantum of Solace and I guess i somehow accidentally ended up here. Quantum of Solace, you know, James Bond? It wasnt my favorite movie but at least there weren't any cheezy musical numbers.
HSM 3 has a lead actor who has the acting talent of a crash test dummy. I suggest to parents that they not bring their kid to that movie. Go to the aquarium, read a book, watch Goldfinger, i don't care, just don't expose them to the brainwashing HSM 3.
