Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Raising the broom for this year’s Summer Blockbusters
The sixth entry in the enormously successful Harry Potter series is bound for glory at the box office as J.K. Rowling’s beloved characters get older and take on new challenges. In fact, for pure fun, adventure, romance and thrills this is clearly going to be the movie to raise the bar for this summer’s blockbusters. With Harry, Ron and Hermione feeling the pangs of love and ominous signs that the final battle is nearing, this is the most spectacular and richly satisfying Potter movie yet, topping all that have come before it. Expect business to fly higher than a Quidditch player, with US and international returns hitting the stratospheric mark. The only snag in the film’s predictable success is the result of a scheduling snafu that will force the majority of IMAX theaters to receive the title two weeks after it hits regular screens. In every other way, it’s smooth sailing.
Director David Yates returns after successfully helming the Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix in 2007. Screenwriter Steve Kloves, writer of the first four installments, is now returning after missing the last film. Their teaming proves fortuitous as these filmmakers take the Hogwarts gang into considerably darker and more grown up territory than ever before. Fans of the book will not be disappointed as this edition is, per usual, slavishly loyal to Rowling’s meticulous plotting.
Basic storyline picks up in the first scene with ominous gray clouds literally dwarfing the screen and three of Lord Voldemort’s evil Death Eaters unleashed to wreak havoc in London. For Professor Dumbledore (a superb Michael Gambon) these are signs that the ultimate confrontation is nearing and he must prepare Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) for the inevitable. To this end, he enlists the “The Chosen One” (Harry) to befriend returning Hogwarts Potions Professor Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent). Slughorn holds the key to very critical information regarding Voldemort’s destructive plans. Standing in the way is the increasingly dangerous Professor Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) and Harry’s main teenaged nemesis, Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton), the latter of which feels he should be the rightful “Chosen One,” and sets out to shake things up. Meanwhile, Cupid is working overtime as Harry and his cohorts Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) are all feeling the hormonally induced urges of young love in its various forms. As their own romantic yearnings get impossibly tangled up, the biggest challenge of all awaits the Muggle and wizard community and only one Mr. Potter may be up to the imposing task at hand.
The hallmarks of Rowling’s brilliant concept are all on display here, and while this blockbuster franchise could coast at this point and still rake in the dough, The Half-Blood Prince instead takes great risks by getting dark in the film’s second half and killing off a major character along the way. This one goes where no Potter has gone before and it all works beautifully.
Allowing the characters, the actors who play them and the audience to all grow older and wiser together is a smart decision. Radcliffe, Grint and Watson are again all pro, really digging into their now familiar roles with style. Grint in particular gets to shine by showing strong comic chops as he deals with girl problems in the form of the aggressively horny Lavender Brown (a hilarious Jessie Cave), underlying romantic tension with Hermione and Harry’s sudden heart palpitations for Ron’s sister, Ginny (a lovely Bonnie Wright). Oscar winner Broadbent is a great addition and Rickman skillfully dominates much of the proceedings. It’s Gambon, however, who steals the movie with a towering performance as Dumbledore—particularly in a spectacular set piece in which he takes Harry to the heart of Voldemort’s fortress.
Special kudos go to cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, whose stunningly muted visuals bring the look of this series to a whole new artistic level. With Yates, Kloves and the rest of the crew now filming the two part finale, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, this is one franchise in great shape and looks like it’s going to go out in high style.

So what does Dumbledore do to the fortress when they get there? Redecorate it? (giggle giggle, swish swish).

Quite honestly this review is a bunch of bs. About 75% of it could be found in either wikipedia's page of the movie or a cliffnotes version of the book. The other 25% actually pertaining to the quality of the movie is so generic that it could apply to ANY movie with the names of the characters and director plugged in. It'll still probably be a good movie, but from this review, we have no idea.

While movie number 5 was a HUGE letdown, I am pleased to see Kloves is back as screenwriter, and from the looks of the trailers, I think it will be far beyond any of the other movies. Still curious as to what is up with them blowing up the Burrow- did I miss something? Did they move into the beginning of DH?? Can't wait to see tonight at midnight!!!

My question is: Did you actually SEE the 5th movie?? Slavishly loyal?? They butchered it.
I just hope Emma Watson isn't as whiny as she usually sounds. She was great as Hermione in HP1..and then suddenly everything she said was breathy and sounding like she was about to burst into tears at any second. ugh. She toned it down a little in HP5.. I'm really hoping she tones it down more for this one.

I think I'll just watch and enjoy without having to talk through it, or make a face.

Let me start off by saying that I am a die-hard Harry Potter fan.
But this movie proved to me that I am only a fan of the original BOOKS. From a cinematographer's point of view, it was very well done and I was impressed. Yet as a fan who longs for the movies to stay as true to the books as possible (understanding time constraints), I was deeply disappointed at the screenwriter. I understand having to leave out certain things for time, but PLEASE, having the big fight at the end would have attracted more people in for the movie! Yet they chose to leave that whole part out- when harry and dumbledore return from their adventure and the battle between the Order and the Death Eater s ensue. I was disappointed that a lot of my favorite and important details were left out, but what made the most crestfallen was that main scene was eliminated. There were many discrepancies that I found, and I wonder at how they will do the 7th book with this lack of details.

i dont mean to say that the movie was bad, but it was by no means the best potter yet. There were several scenes that got me excited but then disappointed me. Plus, they got rid of the battle between the students and the death eaters, and dumbledores funeral. They practically made the whole movie a chick flick/relationship comedy. Critics should save theyre really good reviews for movies like transformers 2, that deserve it.

this movie quite sucks.
the storyline is completely wrong from the book for starters, they even make up scenes that don't exist in the book and forget important scenes that carry the storyline further for the last movie. who cares so much about the students their relationships? that's not what the book is all about, that's just the sidestory of the book.
But a big thumbs up for Alan Rickman, Michael Gambon & Jim Broadbent, they were exellent in performing their characters.
for me the movie feels like just another hollywood production to make money, disappointing the fans while they are at it.
David yates should never direct the last movie.
and please for god sake, they're making 2 parts of it just to keep the cash flowing.. it better be worth it, if they start cutting / pasting like they did with this movie, i won't even watch it.

I was so excited to see this movie. That my eyes just widen up with anticipation for this film. I was just like a kid again. I have to admit both Herminey and Jenny are both hot looking ladies. And that girl who liked Ron reminded me of that movie fatal attraction. Except for the lack of violence. You know she had that look though........."Why are you ignoring me Dan?!!!" Anyways, just the romance, the betrayal, the love of everyone of this film that we've grown up with. All mesh together well. If there is going to be a revamp or some sort of future continuation after all the films are done I would be open to it.

As an avid fan of the books, it was disappointing for me to leave out a lot of the 'memory lane' aspects. Also not happy at the way they portrayed the ending with Harry just watching like some coward while snape and malfoy are dealing with dumbledore. Why couldn't Harry have just be incapable of moving like in the book.
However as a film in it's own right it was very good.

I studied in cinema and I don't think I'm the target audience when there is a new blockbuster coming out in theaters. However, I'm a huge fan of the books so, you'll understand, I have seen all the movies and analysed them. The day before "The Half-Blood Prince" Movie got out, my favorite "Potter" movie was "The Prisoner of Azkaban". I went to see the new movie last wednesday, and seriously, "The Dark Knight" was a pretty beautiful blockbuster movie, but this Harry Potter, totally blew me away; the adolescent humor vis-à-vis the darkness surrounding the world was done with taste. Obviously, this is the most sharpened "Potter" movie of the franchise on the camera angles. They are funny, and sometimes disturbing, so director David Yates did his reserches. And the scenario. I mean, "The Order of the Phoenix" movie kinda sucks compared to the book it was based from. In "The Half-Blood Prince" movie, I was a little disappointed that they didn't introduced the weird Gaunt family and the mother of Lord Voldemort. But the lenght of the scenes, of the camera movements, everything was so rich, I want to see it again and again.
Best Potter movie... yet.

Yeah. Makes SO much sense. These people just wrote their OWN version of HP6. As if they know better than JK. The Burrow burning? Where was Fleur, isn't there supposed to be a wedding next book? Tonks looked perfectly happy. Wasn't Harry going to break up with Ginny at the end?
If you've read the books, you CANNOT like this movie. If you haven't, I don't know how you followed anything in the story anyway.

Okay let's just begin i seen this movie 4 times and still i'm not tired of it. Best movie even better than the Dark Knight. Now, here is the downfall if you read the book try and erase the memory of reading it from your head because the movie was so different but don't want to ruin it. Fleur was nowhere in the movie at all which pissed me off. And tonks never found Harry it was Luna Lovegood there was indeed changes in this installment of HP but it was the best one yet. And the funniest yet. What i really want is for the movie to gross more than Titanic i'm tired of seeing that as the #1 movie of all time. But, what i would like more is a eight harry potter book oontinue the series. Now, the stupidest thing is the last movie being split into two parts that is just the worst idea ever! who cares have people sit five hours watching harry potter i would do it and besides they will probrably make it nothing like the book. but, the point is get up go watch this movie it is worth it

The acting is sub-par. These people don't even click anymore, Harry's relationship just seemed awkward for god's sake, even if you remove from your mind from the book and watch it as a movie, this still sucks. There is no heart, not even in the end where were the tears? no where, just frowned faces. Given the events you would've thought these kids would've atleast cried. This is not the best harry potter yet, and ever since 5 I may not bother wasting my time on another.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was an excellent book, very well written. Unfortunately, the movie script was very poorly written and poorly directed. I was shocked that David Yates, who directed some of the other films and Steve Kloves, who wrote most of the screen plays, actually bombed this very important installment of the Harry Potter series. The scenes were very choppy at best and, even though the actors tried hard to bring the audience in, the choppy scenes made it impossible to truly engage in the characters' emotional moments. This should have been a 2 movie book, instead of just one, and much more detail should have been included. Each scene should have lasted twice as long and Kloves and Yates should have incorporated more of the information within the book onto the screen. I've tolerated the many differences from the book, to the screen in all of the past films. And this movie has alot of the book within it, but I wish they'd focused harder on key elements of the book rather than make up their own. The way the film looks is amazing but the way it was written and directed are not.

the book is a thousands times better than movie.
the reasons
1.there was no action except running and playing with the wand and that was 10 minutes of three hours movie.
2. the script is far from book
3. the acting was really good
there was alot of talking and stupid scenes the director could change it with action scenes
and its my personal point of view.
the best part of harry potter is 5 te order of phoenix

Okay, for one, how many more times can they make a 30 year old MAN look like a kid in his early teens? And second, when is this story (Harry Potter) ever going to have a point??? I've seen every Harry Potter, and damn, they cant hold a story for crap. First its Harry all famous because he survived "you know who" then its discovering who "you know who" was, which they defeated in the first movie... Then its Harry's "demented" uncle, Then its some stupid! competition, Then its assembling "dumbeldore's army"... Why do they need an army? I dont know if the last movie just bored me or what, but next thing I knew, they were talking about assembeling an army. I would expect a movie series to have a flowing story... And book series for that matter
