The Twilight Saga: New Moon

by Amy Nicholson

You'd have to do much worse to end this crush

Talk to a Twilight fan (or Twihard or Twimom or Twitard, if you're nasty) and you'll hear concessions: Stephenie Meyer’s books are poorly written, Twilight is too melodramatically directed. Even Edward, they'll admit, is way emo and Bella sullen with entitlement. And that's from the devoted. New Moon isn't good enough to seduce new fans, but it's not bad enough to break off relentless infatuations. And though it'll make a mint, the big test is if fans will leave clamoring for the next two movies (the third of which is in production and the fourth plagued by concerns that it's unfilmable).

Enjoying all of New Moon's 130-minute running time (as I did, well enough) takes the ability to swoon and snort simultaneously—say, when a fantasy Bella runs through the woods in gray chiffon, or Edward recites the closing lines of Romeo and Juliet by heart. (He has been in high school for 80 years). We pick up at the start of Bella's (Kristen Stewart) senior year where she's devastated to turn the ripe old age of 18. Her vampire love (Robert Pattinson) stopped aging at 17 and Jacob (Taylor Lautner), the young Quileute Indian waiting for Edward to screw up with the irresistibly glum beauty, is just sweet 16. (And if you think Melissa Rosenberg's script is too weepy to make a cougar joke, you'd be wrong.)

When Edward breaks up with Bella and skips town, throwing in a few hurtful kicks so she won't follow, New Moon becomes a melodrama about a broken heart that gradually and sweetly mends. Edward and Jacob (or for fans, Team Edward and Team Jacob) represent the poles of immediate love with a stranger or patient love with a friend. As a sensible girl, I'd go Team Jacob, and not just because Jacob's wolf pack requires going topless. (If you're wondering how they keep their pants post-transformation, that's a secret for the book.) But Bella's again fallen for a reluctant killer—the werewolves' temper has already gotten one of their girlfriends maimed—which means even more shots of screaming and crying and running in the rain. But though Bella's dad (Billy Burke) advises her to “love who is good for you,” she still carries a torch for Edward—just the sight of his face sucks the air from her body. (Ironic, given he once crooned to her, “Bella, you give me everything just by breathing.”) They share the ultimate of teenager status symbols: a great love no one understands. In the ’50s that got sweethearts run over by trains. Here they battle carnivorous vampires. Same difference.

In interviews, you get the sense that everyone involved in the franchise from director Chris Weitz to his stars would rather being doing something else. That translates on the screen; in the way the camera awkwardly steps in and back during another declaration of love, the way that Pattinson clenches his jaw when Edward has to say something ridiculous, the way you can feel Stewart trying her darnedest not to bite her lips and stroke her hair (two tics teased by everyone from the blogosphere to Taylor Swift on SNL). The ultimate question is: if fans reluctantly love the books and reluctantly love the films, what's the source of their great love no one understands? It's part-Pattinson, but not wholly. After all, few bothered to catch Little Ashes, his catastrophic turn as Salvador Dali. The best I can figure is that fans are in love with themselves, with this fun and festive club they've formed, the goofy romance of Twilight mania (after all, post-Springsteen, mass culture has sorely lacked messiahs.) How bad does the movie have to be to make them stay away? Much worse than this. Carry on, sweet sisters, carry on.

The books are not poorly written. The essential truth of the books is the extended dialog which allows the reader to see inside the mind of Bella and Edward and Jacob. Some of the dialog may seem odd because this was Stephenie Meyer's first attempt at writing, but some of it is glorious. The actors understand the books, and love what they are doing. They don't wish they were somewhere else at all, according to everything they have said, they are up to the challenge of bringing the books to the screen. Critics savaged Wuthering Heights when it was written, and today it stands as a classic. The same will happen for The Twilight Saga.

I think I'm a little old for all this emo drama - I really didn't think much of the first film and out of curiosity I've read all four of the books. I really can't understand "Twi-hards" over the age of 19 thinking that this is some great work; it's a pastiche of much that has gone before it (Emily Bronte, Anne Rice, Buffy & Angel and most early and late Gothic fiction) and all that has gone before it is infinitely better. I agree that Stewart and Pattinson look bored through most of this, and in Stewart's case this is understandable as she has done good work in "Panic Room" and "Into The Wild". Pattinson...well...he'll have to prove himself as far as I'm concerned.

I really enjoyed the movie. It was Ironic that the head vampire in twilight opposite another movie he was in UnderWorld 1,2,and 3 was the head Werewolf. I'm not a huge twilight fan. But I'm impressed with the story thus far. In my honest opinion. Series wise Harry Potter beets twilight saga. Hands down. The last epic story from the 7th book will beat the twilight saga hands down.

Books are poorly written to those who have poor imaginations. Meyers' books are written for those people who can put themself into the character, who can easily picture what is going on. If you cannot imagine yourself as Bella Swan, then you cannot imagine what true love is like. If not that, then you are a bitter person who does not know what it is like to love someone who seems to good for you, or to be in love with your best friend. I can agree the first movie was poorly directed, poorly written (for not following the book as it should have)and Stewart may not have been the best choice for the part of Bella but there are qualities about her that fit. Stewart has always played roles that required a melancholy character (Speak, Panic Room) so at times she doesn't fit the part, such as when Bella is internally excited to see Edward but he can still read that she is excited. I can agree with that. As for Pattinson, if you have ACTUALLY read the books, and more than once, you would KNOW that in the book Edward is described as always feeling hurt or looking hurt because he does not think he is good enough for Bella. Therefore, that jaw clenching you have described, Nicholson, is NOT because he is saying a stupid line, it is because THAT is ACTUALLY what happens. Amy Nicholson, if you want to critque something, especially on a site that millions of people are going to read, I sure hope next time you do YOUR OWN homework. Read the books, get an imagination, learn what love feels like. Your entire piece sounded of bitterness and as if the opinions you were given were from people who did not like the book. Also, for the next time as well, talk to a real Twilight fan and see what they see and feel when they read the books.

I'll admit, the movies aren't that great. The whole appeal for me stems from the on and off screen chemistry from Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. I get more joy watching their interviews than the movies. To be honest, I would rather breaking dawn not be made and replaced with another movie outside of the saga staring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. I fear that breaking dawn will be career suicide for these two actors who work so hard.

I think everyone involved with New Moon did the best they possibly could given the material they had to work with. Stephenie Meyer's writing is weak. The characters do not develop and seem a little flat at times. This constrains the actors because they have to follow the books. I wouldn't mind some deviation as long as they keep the relationship of Edward and Bella true. Unfortunately, New Moon failed to capture the fundamental Edward/Bella moments that most fans desire.

If Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were not in this series, I could care less about it

I think New Moon was a huge improvement from the first film, twilight. But at the same time I myself can't find a reason to defend the opinions of others meaning if there is a bad review for the movie or a good that's peoples opinion that we are all entitled to. Twihard fans will never find anything wrong with the movie no matter how bad or good they are. I for one can't find myself drooling over twilight that much, I mean I'm a fan just as the next, but come on people its not that serious.

i hated the movie!
seriously it had the ****tiest dialogue ever!
the graphics were just horrible.
so many cheesy scenes.
worst acting ever.
there was like glitter everywhere
those eyes were just creepy
kristen stewart and her weird seizures
the make up was just horrifying
seriously the movie was completely emo
most people liked it just because of taylor lautner.
his body caught the audiences attention not the movie.
i'd say the screenwriter has a horribe IQ!
and i still can't believe box office gave it 3 stars
it should be more like at 1 star.
seriously a 2 hour movie made in one year of course it'd be like ****!

KAT, I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU. Now at first i was angry at the critics for bashing the movie, im sorry but the movie should not get a 30% rating on rotten tomatoes and nor do i think it should get a 90% rating because it's not a movie that is gonna blow non-fans away. Its a book and a movie that is in place to transition into the next 2 books, which have more plot and story-line cuz new moon effectively introduces the love triangle. To critics who have not read the book, the movie may have seemed long and i agree with them that there is a lack of chemistry between jacob and bella. I think you can get the sense already that jacob is not right for bella...but obviously if you read the books it takes him awhile to figure that out. But summit and its producers are so caught up in this love triangle crap that they wanna portray yet its really not that big in new moon and they forget to portray the emotions effectively at the end of the movie. Its not like all movies are that exciting in the middle..sometimes movies are just plotting along but maybe that have a good start and then a great finish. New moon started great...pretty much EXACTLY like the book and some funny lines thrown in were great. But then they start rushing through the the middle of the movie with jacob and bella. I think they made bella smile way too early in the movie, they portrayed jake as nicer than he really is at times, and they cut down the action scenes with the wolves and laurent and between jake and paul (they should have carried them out longer cuz people love action). But i think that if the movie finished on an emotional rollercoaster, then the critics would have accepted the movie more. Since i read the books, i had emotions running through me cuz i was reliving the book in my head but if u haven't read the books, i think they rushed bella going to save edward and they didn't make it dramatic enough. Even after alice tells bella what edward is going to do, they don't let her freak out enough..she yells at jake for a split second and then bam we are in the car. Right at this point the best part of the book starts and they should spent more time making it dramatic and intense. They shoulda had bella running upstairs freaking out, packing her clothes fast and then running to the car. And then jake begging her not to go and to stay for him (i think they used a more emotional taylor in the trailers when they showed him saying to stay for him...in the final cut of the movie it seems that his words were spoken fast without emotion...i also noticed that with laurent when he said to bella that you are so mouth-watering...it sounded more emotional in the trailer...its like the sped up the way the actors talked sometimes). Then i dont mind that they skipped the dialogue between alice and bella during the flight over, but still they rushed alice in the porsche with bella. They should had bella freaking out more, they should have showed an alice vision of edward asking the volturi to kill him, and then after more bella freaking out, they should have had alice flash to the vision of the volturi denying him. THen alice should have payed off the guards to let her go through and then bella should have started her chase to save edward. And the music during the chase was terrible and should have been more intense and dramatic. Then bella should have shouted edward don't when she is running towards him (i know it was shot that way, but i guess in the final cut, they used a different version of her not shouting). Then i'm still not sure if i liked that edward told bella he lied so early. Really bella doesn't find this out until they are back in her bedroom and she wakes up thinking everything was a dream. SO they didn't even let kstew act like she wasn't sure if edward still loved her...it was like a second of doubt and then edward told her he lied. That scene went on way too long and was inserted in the wrong spot to me, technically demetri and felix come immediately after bella pushes edward out of the sunlight. But i dunno i guess if u had to cut the time of the movie down, that was ok. But still the whole leading up the saving edward was much to fast and for anybody that was not a huge fan, i don't think u would have sat there in your seat in suspense. But everything from the volturi on was pretty good and i liked how they ended it on a cliff hanger.

I'm not a twilight saga book fan nor the movie! But, Stephenie Mayer's work is captivating enough, especially for the Adult teenagers' minds with great imaginations. The author and the movie maker are worth of applause. There are maybe flaws from the movie, but I think, Pattinson just portrayed very well the character of Edward Cullen. When you read the book, and imagine Pattinson in the movie, you'll see that Pattinson is fit for the character... How his eyebrows furrowed, those jaws, and the clenching of teeth... and his physique zzzzzzz... though the book (new moon) was quite boring, but that doesn't mean it's not worth reading... The whole story (the four books) has sense...if you have that open mind...to see...

I wasn't really in to reading books at all until i read these books and i am thankful for them cause they increased my vocaulary and how fast i read. As for the movies i liked them. The first one was ok it could have been better, but the second one was great. I'm not going to bash Amy cause it's her job to break down movies and tell you whats wronge with them and yes some of the things she said were wrong. But as long as i know i like the books and the movie i dont care what other people say. I will keep going to see the movies because it's what i love. And as for Breaking Dawn i would loved if they made it but i just hope they make it right and stick to the book, even though it will be hard to make i believe that summit can do it! So...... for all you Twihards keep on going to see these movies and prove everybody wrong that says the movies bad.And for people that have never read the books or have never seen the movie i think you should cause its a good read and movie!!!!!

have to say I am a long time fan of vamps, read all 4 books and found them to be painfully long and drawn out as well as written to a tween/teen audience, which was obviously her intent. However, they had some interesting concepts, characters and relationships. I always feel that great literature targeting a younger audience should be equally engaging and intelligently written for any age group even if the content needs to be age appropriate. Authors like J.K. Rowling, C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, even Roald Dahl wrote incredible fantasy appropriate for a younger audience but equally appreciated by all ages. I'm not disrespecting her, she did breathe life into those characters, I'm just surprised that it's as HUGE a success as it is. I've read all of Ann Rice's vamp novels and although definitely not appropriate for that age group, a much more intelligent, intriguing voice. I will say though, she has found her target audience....young girls do swoon for their undead

It deserves more than 3 or 4 stars,i mean, the effects, and screen play and sound track?? They were gr8!! Thoz complaining probably havent read the bks n u dont expect the director 2 put the whole bk, other wise it'd take 5 or more hours. I have to admit this film was 10X better than the first one. A lot more action, drama, even suspense. And the next movies can only get better and better. By the time the next film comes out there will be more fans of the books coming out of the wood works just to see what happens next. In my honest opinion if they don't take a lot away from the books. I'm sure they will have a successful franchise.
