Tony Scott’s Unstoppable, previously scheduled for production this fall, has run into a barricade of budget problems and will likely be put on the backburner at Fox.
Denzel Washington (American Gangster) and Chris Pine (Star Trek) are attached to star in the renegade train pic, but neither has inked a deal. Washington’s high price tag—he earns an average of $20 million per film—may be stymieing budget discussions. Scott’s salary is yet to be determined as well.
The studio has also voiced qualms about the high production cost, a staple in Scott’s recent action projects. His big-budget ventures in the last decade include Déjà vu with $64 million domestically, Man on Fire with $78 million and Spy Game with $62.3 million.
The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, the fourth collaboration between Scott and Washington, has managed to reel in only $53 million domestically since its June 5 release. The film’s underachieving gross will certainly influence Fox as it slashes Unstoppable's budget.
