Gattaca and Lord of War writer/director Andrew Niccol is attached to adapt The Host, the first novel by Twilight author Stephenie Meyer to be directed at grown-ups. The rights to the book were secured by producers Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz.
The story follows a woman named Melanie, who is inhabited by The Wanderer, one of a new species of beings that has taken over Earth and uses humans as "hosts". The Wanderer is unable to fight off Melanie's soul, and they both find themselves tracking down Jared, the man Melanie is in love with.
Niccol has not directed a film since Lord of War in 2005, although he has a sci-fi drama known as The Cross in pre-production, with Orlando Bloom attached. Lord of War earned $24.1 million domestically. New Moon, the second film in the Twilight series, opens on November 20, 2009.
