After a long absence from the screen following his DUI arrest in 2006, Mel Gibson returns in the new trailer for the revenge thriller Edge of Darkness. The film was co-written by William Monahan (The Departed) and directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale), who also directed the 1985 miniseries on which the movie is based. Danny Huston and Ray Winstone co-star.
Historically, studios have had trouble luring people to the movies in January, causing the month to become a dumping ground for weak films. This year, however, Fox opened the English-language, French-produced thriller Taken on the last week of January, which racked up a massive $145 million gross in the United States. Warner Bros. has taken the same date, no doubt hoping for a similar reaction when Edge of Darkness opens on January 29, 2010.
