MGM, still potentially in dire financial straits, has put one of their long-gestating projects on an extended hold, moving their remake of the 1982 Steven Spielberg/Tobe Hooper collaboration Poltergeist from its previously-announced November 24, 2010 date to an unspecified slot in 2011.
The production of the original Poltergiest and its sequels was rumored to be "cursed" after several cast members passed away, and it was also speculated that Spielberg used Hooper as a intermediary to direct the film himself. The remake was written by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White and Vadim Perelman (House of Sand and Fog) was attached to direct. There is no word yet on whether Perelman will stick with the project through the delay. Poltergeist made $74.7 million at the US box office in 1982, or approximately $182 million, when adjusted for inflation.
