Only a few months after director Rob Cohen announced he was leaving the project, rumors have started to spread that star Vin Diesel is also quitting xXx 3, which would seriously derail the film, currently subtitled The Return of Xander Cage after Diesel's character.

The project was intended to be the much-hyped reteaming of Cohen and Diesel, who worked together on two of the films that made Diesel a star (the original xXx and the first Fast and the Furious) before having a bit of a falling out. When Cohen was signed to the project, he mentioned that they had reconciled their differences, but ultimately chose to work on the upcoming Medieval instead. It's possible that without Cohen, Diesel lost interest in returning for the sequel, which hired Invincible's Ericson Core as a replacement helmer, but as of now, it's only speculation, since Diesel has not officially announced he's leaving the project.

If Diesel is still on board, the film is slated be released in 2011, although it may not be made at all if he has moved on to other projects. The original xXx made $141.2 million in the United States back in 2002, while a sequel, helmed by Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day) and starring Ice Cube only earned $25.6 million domestically.
