After years of rumors and several months of speculation, Wes Craven may be ready to step back into the director's chair for Scream 4, the long-awaited new entry in the postmodern slasher series. Kevin Williamson, who wrote Scream and Scream 2, is also returning to write 4, suggesting that it might be the start of a second trilogy. Craven directed all three original films.
Earlier in the year, fans speculated heavily on the possibility of star Neve Campbell returning as Sidney Prescott. Previously, she had denied interest in returning, and Williamson saying on his official Twitter account that her initial refusal to be involved prompted a rewrite, but Harvey Weinstein recently claimed she had agreed to appear (although word is now that her involvement is limited). Courtney Cox and David Arquette are scheduled to return in starring roles.
The previous Scream (written by Ehren Kruger instead of Williamson) earned $89.1 million domestically ($118.7 million, when adjusted for inflation) when it opened on February 6th, 2000. Scream 4 is tentatively slated to open in 2010, ten years after Scream 3.
