Laeta Kalogridis, writer of Martin Scorsese's 2010 horror picture Shutter Island, has been tapped to pen a new adaptation of the 1989 manga Ghost in the Shell for DreamWorks Pictures.

The book, written by Masamune Shirow, was previously made into a popular animated movie back in 1995. A sequel, titled Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, took almost ten years to be released, finally surfacing in 2004, and DreamWorks was responsible for its US theatrical run.

The film is being produced by Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul through the Seaside Entertainment label. Avi Arad was previously the Chief Creative Officer, director, chairman and ultimately CEO of Marvel Entertainment, and he was the founder of Marvel Studios, the company's motion picture arm. He left the company in 2006, although he still produces many of Marvel's movies.

Ghost in the Shell is tentatively being planned as a 3D movie, and unlike previous adaptations, it will be a live-action film. Currently, there isn't any evidence it will be a remake of the animated film, only a new adaptation of the source comic. No release date has been targeted.
