Online rumors are suggesting that director Sam Raimi wants Sherlock Holmes star Rachel McAdams to play The Black Cat in the upcoming Spider-Man 4, for which stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst are slated to return.
Possible corroboration for the rumor comes from Atonement actress Romola Garai, who has a column in the UK newspaper The Observer, noted that she "put herself on tape" for a Spider-Man 4 role, although she did not specify which one. In the comic books, the character is a cat burglar looking to free her dying father from prison, who meets and becomes romantically obsessed with Spider-Man.
After a string of successes starting with 2005's Wedding Crashers, the actress took a break in 2006 and only made one movie in 2007 and 2008, finally returning to the big screen in full force this year in State of Play, The Time Traveler's Wife and the aforementioned Sherlock Holmes. The Guy Ritchie-directed action comedy stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, and opens on Christmas Day.
